Retreats are an excellent way to experience Zen practice. Beginner's are welcome and encouraged to attend. Retreats at Awakened Meditation Centre emphasize a balance of group practice and individual initiative under the guidance of a teacher. A long sitting is a time of sustained meditation, an opportunity to simplify our lives. The daily schedule includes sitting, chanting, walking, 108 bowing and Dharma talk.
Through Zen meditation, a whole world of possibilities opens to the students for improving life and appreciating it because the mind attains calmness, clarity and awareness in silence. Through Zen meditation, the wisdom and compassion heart wakes up for the sake of the others for them to flourish with happiness, peace, and joy.
Nan-in received a university professor who came to inquire about Zen.
Nan-in served tea. He poured his visitor's cup full and then kept on pouring.
The professor watched the overflow until he could restrain himself no longer. "It is overfull. No more will go in!"
"Like this cup," Nan-in said, "you are full of your own opinions and speculations. How can I show you Zen unless you first empty your cup?"
