Venerable Hwasun Yangil brings to life the earthy practice of Korean Zen through his teaching of the Ko-an Zen techniques devised by the ancient Zen masters to awaken the minds of practitioners to their true nature.
Ordained a monk in the Korean Buddhist Chogye Order, Venerable Hwasun Yangil trained with the Most Venerable Wol Ha, Supreme Patriarch of the Chogye Order in South Korea.
In 1986, at the request of his Master, Venerable Hwasun Yangil came to Canada to teach and spread the Dharma. Since then, he has taught Zen meditation and Buddhism to Canadian and American students and has also led retreats and meditation workshops in many countries, including China, Sri Lanka, India and the Philippines, England and Korea.
Venerable Hwasun Yangil serves as president of the Sangha Council of Ontario Buddhist Ministry: the Buddhist Council of North America; the Maha Prajna Compassionate Society International; and, as abbot of Korean Buddhist temples and Zen centres in Toronto, New York, Philadelphia, and Manila.
Venerable Hwasun Yangil has received the distinguished titles of Honorable Supreme Patriarch in Sri Lanka and Tripitaka Master in China.
